The Problem….
This2015 Audi SQ5 came into the workshop with& 160,000 km and a full logbook service history. At first glance, that sounds pretty reassuring, But during our inspection Northside Hi-Performanace, we check every filter — not just the oil. What we found. When we pulled out the fuel filter, we found something interesting. It was still the original factory Audi filter, 160,000 km later and it had never been replaced
So we took a closer look…
After draining the fuel at Northside Hi Performance, we took a sample and found it was heavily contaminated.
We then cut open the filter housing to inspect the internal filter media, and the photos say it all.
That’s 160,000 km worth of dirt, moisture, and contaminants trapped in a component that should have been replaced multiple times throughout the vehicle’s life.
Now consider this ….
Replacing a fuel filter is preventative maintenance.
Replacing a fuel system isn’t.
A fuel filter is to your engine what clean drinking water is to your body.
If we drank dirty water every day, the effects wouldn’t be immediate — but sooner or later, it would catch up with us. Your engine is no different.
Modern diesel engines run extremely high fuel pressures — often over 30,000 psi — and rely on components built with microscopic tolerances. Because of this, even tiny amounts of dirt, rust, or moisture can create serious problems. Contaminated fuel doesn’t simply “run through” the system. It causes real, measurable wear to:
- High‑pressure fuel pumps — contamination can score internal surfaces and create metal shavings that circulate through the system.
- Injectors — fine particles distort spray patterns, reduce efficiency, and eventually cause misfires or failure.
- Precision internal components — moisture promotes corrosion, and sediment damages surfaces designed to operate within microns of accuracy.
And when these components fail… the repair cost isn’t minor. Fuel system repairs on modern diesels can easily run into the thousands.
This is why replacing a fuel filter is considered preventative maintenance.
Replacing an entire fuel system is not.
Regular fuel filter changes protect performance, extend engine life, and prevent the kind of contamination‑related
The fact is….
Every vehicle is equipped with a fuel filter — whether it’s located inside the tank or mounted externally.
What many owners don’t realise is that a fuel filter is not a lifetime component. It’s a critical part of your vehicle’s protection system, and when it’s neglected, contamination builds up long before you ever see symptoms.
Don’t assume it’s being replaced just because your car is being serviced. Ask the question. Some workshops only do the minimum, and that can leave you with preventable, very expensive fuel‑system damage down the track.
If you want your vehicle serviced properly — not just stamped and sent out the door — bring it to Northside Hi Performance.
We take the time to inspect, maintain, and replace the components that actually matter to your engine’s reliability, efficiency, and long‑term health.
Proper servicing isn’t about ticking boxes.
It’s about protecting your investment and keeping your vehicle performing the way it should.
